Why Now?
As the economy continues to plummet, rates of violence increase in many arenas, making violence prevention a critical human service. The many types of violence that experts say increase during economic declines include child abuse, domestic violence, gang violence and workplace violence.
There are more and more calls to crisis lines for issues such as domestic violence, suicide and child abuse. Nonprofit leaders largely see the economy as the primary reason for the significant jump in crisis line calls (Simerman, Mercury News, Dec. 2008). Gang violence is also on the rise across the country and police officers are worried that the flagging economy may exacerbate an already growing problem (Brosseau, Tuscan Citizen, April 2008). The economic recession and ongoing, significant employment cut-backs have put many workers on-edge, fearing their homes, finances and jobs could be in danger. Preparins, Inc., a leading organization that specializes in workforce preparedness solutions, forecasts that stressed caused by the suffering economy may lead to increased workplace violence. “There has been an overwhelming amount of pressure lately at home and work due to the current economic meltdown,” says Gail Tolbert, an independent human resource consultant in Atlanta. “These anxieties could cause irrational behaviors in the workplace that don’t normally exist."
