They encourage us to join a community of people who are taking action to end hatred and build community in the world. As the photographs in their new book make clear, we are all one people.

Regardless of nationality, ethnicity, skin color or religion, we are more alike than different.

The Milestones Project aims to replace fear and hatred of those who are different with respect for our shared humanity. The Steckel's message of tolerance and peace is portrayed through images of children - one photograph at a time - that focus on the similarities of children from all cultures at milestones in their lives. Six years and 23,000 photogrpahs later, the Steckels continue to extend their project - their next goal: to establish the Milestones International Peace Prize for children - a youth version of the Nobel Peace Prize for adults.

Says Richard Steckel, "Parents have the same universal yearning. They all want their children to have hope, to become decent human beings, to have options, to live a life that makes a difference. The Milestones Project has the potential to unite people with these values."
