Wet, Rainy Successful Garden Tour
By Becci McCormack

Due to the rain, tour goers enjoyed more lush vibrant gardens, glistening wet with life. Many new to the tour experienced delights such as Ronnie’s bird house collection, urban farms, unique yard art, creative water features, and therapeutic gardening.

Maggie Helseth, garden tour coordinator said, “in spite of the rainy soggy weather there was a spirit of comradely.” Those in attendance felt a bond to one another, like they were working together in a tough situation to support peacekeeping. On this day, the struggle was against the elements. Since a major part of the garden tour’s purpose is building community, the coordinator said it was an effective year.

The after party, hosted at the 23rd Avenue Sculpture Studio, held a large group as musical guests entertained an intimate audience. Food, wine and beer was as abundant, and the gathering raised more money than expected.

Proceeds support The Conflict Center’s school programs that teach social and emotional skills to create peaceful learning communities.

The 10th Annual Garden Tour of Northwest Denver Gardens was a success despite the cold weather. With temperatures in the 90s now, it’s hard to remember those frigid few weeks of June when all of Denver experienced a true Northwestern United States summer. Gray skies and rain clouds hailed in The Conflict Center’s annual fundraiser.

Though attendance was down, spirits were up as attendees traveled from garden to garden. The first stop on the tour was the Troy Chavez Memorial Peace Garden, which stands as a symbol of peace in this Northwest community. A symbol to remember the violence their community faced, the child victims who were lost to youth violence, and the gangland warfare that took Troy’s life in 1993.
