New Year New Challenges
With the economic recession, 2009 presents to us a challenging year. Some non-profits are struggling to survive. At The Conflict Center we are anticipating the new year with our heads up identifying opportunities, partnerships and new niches. Starting with the new format for our Ambassador of Peace event that now will be a speaker series called Bridging the Gaps. This series of events opens the door for a natural partnership between The Conflict Center and The Institute on Common Good (ICG) at Regis University due to the similarities between the organization’s missions. Through the Bridging the Gaps Speaker Series, TCC and ICG pursue their common goals to: strengthen relationships between the community and higher education, create civil dialogue, enhance nonviolent communication throughout the Denver metro area and increase awareness of alternative dispute resolution approaches among the general public.
We invite you to participate in this incredible opportunity to listen to leaders in the field of nonviolence and to begin 2009 Bridging the Gaps!

- 3. Simple Steps to Restorative Parenting
By Brenda McChesney
Within the past couple of years there has been a movement surging throughout the judicial and educational systems. It’s name, Restorative Justice. The concept spans from international reconciliation commissions for crimes against humanity to kindergarten classroom restorative circles for peer to peer conflict. Each restorative circle seeks to answer the following questions: What happened? (Violation) What was the harm and who was affected? (Responsibility) What need to be done to repair the harm? (Resolution) The intent of these questions is create an understanding and accountability of one’s actions, how our social realm is affected by it, build empathy, repair relationship and reintegrate back into community setting. These goals are achieved by moving from a paradigm of coercion to healing, from solely individual to individual to include collective accountability, from primary dependence on the state (parental authority) to greater self-reliance within the community and family, and from justice as “getting even” to justice as “getting well.”
